Edmodo Lesson #8 ~ DIY Halloween Snacks and A Preview of Edmodo Mondays

Hey!

I wanted to post this now because it's a "Halloween" lesson, but it has taken us a minute to get here.

5th Grade has been on an Edmodo adventure since school started - I've been at it longer than that. I'm going to start a Monday series called Edmodo Mondays that will detail our 10 week intro course to Edmodo on the iPad. I'll start from the beginning while also telling you a bit about current lessons.

5th is still working through "Opening" "Working On", and "Turning In" Edmodo lessons. I do NOT want the direction page back! Added this video response lesson for more practice with this task.

You can check out the lesson .pdf here.
You can watch the lesson video here.

Computer Lab Visual Lesson Plans W11

Time for a new Quarter and a new color! I had forgotten that I chose a color for each Quarter of school this year.

I did this mainly to make my Year at a Glance form easier to read. See?

Second Quarter is blue, as you can see:) Click here to see my lesson plans for the lab this week.

Wonderful Website - Symbaloo

I started using Symbaloo about a week ago in my classroom. I had set up a page with links for 1st Grade over the summer but only started using it in the last month. I do like it but it is NOT a snap to get started!

I needed to watch several tutorial vids just to figure out what to do to get started. Then I had to search to find the answer to every little thing I wanted to do. I was able to find the answers quickly but it was still kind of a pain. Why can't companies make a simple "how to get  up and running in 20 min" guide?!? I ran into this same problem with Edmodo. So glad I had two weeks to fool around with that before I really needed it.

Anyway, back to Symbaloo. Adding tiles is a little clunky but once you get the hang of it it's worth the trouble. I do need to figure out how to stop the links from opening up in a new window - some of the kids had more than 20 windows open when it was time to leave the lab!

Oh, if you love for things to look cute like me you will spend even MORE time setting up your Symbaloo. It is possible to make big pictures with your tiles acting as "puzzle pieces" of sorts. Check out the screen shot of my 1st Grade Symbaloo below. Go here to try the links.

Sweet, right? I totally spent an hour and a half figuring out how to do this. I will share the details in another blog post.

I do plan to become Symbaloo Certified...

Just have to figure out when I'm going to do it.

Are you using Symbaloo? What are your thoughts? Please share below.

1st Grade App of The Week : Word Wizard 2.0

Remember Speak & Spell? No? Watch this:

What I remember most is that I was (still am) an awful speller and I wanted one desperately. But it was $50 so there was no way I was getting one. I also remember my cousins had one because they got everything.

Well guess what? You can have this technology now with Word Wizard 2.0! Look:

The 1st Graders use the app to practice their spelling words!

It's a little pricey at $4.99 but I think it's worth it.

Computer Lab Visual Lesson Plans W9

How in the world are we on the 9th week of school!?!?!?!

I usually don't keep track of the weeks like this. This is the first time I've had a lesson plan format that shouted the week at me from the top of the page. I have a love/hate relationship with it.

Check out my Visual Lesson Plans for the week below:)

Bathroom Break

I needed a new bathroom policy. I don't mind the kids going but the ASKING to go drives. me. crazy.

So now this is on the wall by the front door of the lab.

I saw this basic idea on another teachers blog. She used melamine plates hanging by the door that the kids could write on but I couldn't find any of those so I just made a sign and laminated it. It works great with dry erase markers.

Kids write their number, big, on the right spot. Go. Then come back. WITHOUT TALKING TO ME!

Is there a number already there? Then you can't go.

Love it.

To the left of the sign is a file cabinet where I have a cup of dry erase markers with poms glued to the end for erasing your number when you get back from the bathroom.

By the end of the day, it looks pretty funky. So it gets a daily bath with a baby wipe and then I dry it off.

Good as new!

What's your bathroom policy?
